MEDIA RELEASE: MEC KHOZA TO OFFICIATE THE PROVINCIAL COMMEMORATION OF WORLD POPULATION DAY

The MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal Mrs Nonhlanhla Khoza will officiate the provincial commemoration of World Population Day this week. 11 July was declared World Population Day by the United Nations in 1987 when the world’s population reached the 5 billion mark. World Population day is celebrated differently in different countries and provinces taking into account their unique population dynamics.

This year’s theme is “25 years: The International Conference on Population & Development, looking back, looking forward’ investing in teenage girls”. The theme sterms from the crucial ICPD held in Cairo 25 years ago which marked a turning point in the field of population and development when this day shifted focus from just numbers to human development. United Nations indicates that currently there are more than 1.8 billion young people in the world today, half of them girls and young women, making up the largest youth generation in history.
